Offshore Oil Spill Preparedness Program

ECRC-SIMEC administers a comprehensive Offshore Oil Spill Preparedness Program (the Program) on behalf of the Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Producing Operators: ExxonMobil Canada Properties, Hibernia Management and Development Company (HMDC), Cenovus Energy Inc., and Suncor Energy Inc.

The primary components of the Program include:

  • Vessel-based (Tier 1) response equipment maintenance and inventory checks;
  • Shore-based (Tier 2) oil spill response equipment maintenance and storage;
  • Training of crew members on offshore support vessels; and
  • Training of Response Contractors.

The Offshore Program is fully funded by the Offshore Operators and is supported by dedicated staff at the St. John’s Response Centre.  The Program has evolved to meet the needs of a developing industry and has been successfully delivered for over 10 years.

With the experience and expertise gained in Newfoundland and Labrador, ECRC-SIMEC has been able to effectively deliver similar Programs in Nova Scotia to meet the needs of both Shell and BP during recent exploration drilling campaigns.
